How to Choose the Right Colors for Your Home According to Feng Shui

8/6/2021

If you're looking to give your home a makeover, one of the most important decisions you'll make is deciding on the right paint color. From soft neutrals to bold and vibrant hues, the choices can seem overwhelming! But if you approach the process with a bit of thought and consideration, you can use color to create a beautiful and balanced living space.

One key element to consider when designing a space using the principles of feng shui is what colors work best in certain areas of your home. Color has a powerful effect on us and it can affect how we feel, how we think and how we interact with the world around us.

The five elements of feng shui - wood, fire, earth, metal, and water - all have their own corresponding colors that can be used to create balance in a home. Color plays an important role in feng shui, and when used correctly in a space, it can help set the tone and create a feeling of calm and balance throughout your home. By understanding the meaning behind each color and how it relates to the other elements of feng shui design, you can make sure that you choose the best colors for your home. So, let's get started!

Transform Your Home With the Power of Color

Red

Red is a powerful color that can instantly energize any room in your home. From fire engine red to burgundy, shades of red can evoke feelings of action, excitement, adventure, strength, energy, and passion. In the world of feng shui, red is an auspicious color that is associated with fire energy and luck. However, if you overdo it with red, there can be a lot of chaotic energy in your home. Instead of painting a whole room or a wall red, try using red accents instead such as pillows, decor pieces and art. Our feng shui inspired design boards will show you how to incorporate the color red into your home without going overboard!

Orange

The color orange, especially tones like terracotta, provides more than just a cozy and inviting atmosphere. From the bedroom to the living room, orange is a hue that has a strong connection to the earth and is perfect for its ability to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. It is the perfect color to introduce a sense of stability and grounding into any space. As you balance the five elements of nature – wood, fire, earth, metal and water – in your home, try incorporating a soft orange hue to bring in the calming, grounding characteristics of the earth element. One of my favorites is Fall Harvest (2168-10) by Benjamin Moore.

Yellow

Picture of a white pillow sitting beside a white vase with yellow flowers in it. The wall behind is bright yellow.
The color yellow is an often overlooked color in feng shui, but it can offer so much to the home. Yellow is a vibrant and warm color that brings positivity, joy, and happiness to a space. It is associated with the earth element, providing a grounding and calming energy to a home. Adding touches of yellow in feng shui can bring a burst of fun and can help to improve the overall energy in a home by bringing a sense of connection. Yellow flowers, a yellow throw blanket or even some yellow towels can bring more joy, warmth, fun, and happiness into your space as well as help the space feel grounded and secure.

Green

The color green is associated with growth, renewal and stability, making it an important element in the practice of feng shui. In feng shui, the color green is associated with the wood element, which is connected to upward growth, expansion and strength. Using green in your home design can be a great way to bring in the wood element and create an uplifting energy. From calming sage green to vibrant lime green, there are so many shades of green that can be used to create different energies and feelings. Whether you prefer a more calming atmosphere or something more lively, choose the right shade of green for your design style. Plants are the ideal addition to any room to bring nature indoors but green items, such a green rug, nature inspired fabrics or artwork with trees and greenery are also great options.

Blue

In feng shui, lighter shades of blue, such as teal blue and shades of blue green, are associated with the wood element and are used to improve the harmony of family dynamics, especially when used in the east (which is the family and new beginnings area) part of the home.

Dark navy, however, is associated with the water element as it gets closer to the color black. Not only is dark navy associated with the calming and cooling energy of water, but it can also help to bring in trust, purpose, and flow into your home or workspace. It is associated with career and life goals. My absolute favorite blue shade is Benjamin Moore's Hale Navy (HC-154).

Purple

Purple is often an overlooked color when decorating a home but it is actually one of the most powerful colors to use in feng shui to create an atmosphere of wealth and abundance. It is associated with wealth, luxury and ambition and can be used to create a beautiful and inviting space in your home that elevates the energy of wealth. If you’re looking to bring more wealth and abundance into your life, try incorporating luxurious materials into your home, such as velvet and silk, in a deep, rich purple color to create a sense of opulence and success. The color purple has a rich and powerful history in feng shui, representing luxury, wealth and success but beyond the material benefits, purple also has a strong spiritual and imaginative quality, making it a highly recommended color in feng shui.

Pink

Pink is a powerful color in feng shui, as it is associated with love and relationships. Incorporating different shades pink into your home, especially in the southwest corner of the home, can enhance your love life. If you're in a relationship and you want to create a stronger bond with your partner, add some pink to the southwest corner of the home or in the primary bedroom. If you're single and looking for love, peach is a better option.

Pink is also connected to feelings of compassion and sincerity and can help to activate the energy of self-love in an area. Pink is one of the most powerful colors used in feng shui, as it is related to feminine energy, which can create a sense of love and friendship. By using pink in the home, we can bring more love, relationships, and gratitude into our lives.

Brown

Picture of one side of a bed with a white headboard and brown comforter. The wall behind the bed is painted brown. There is a white nightstand beside the the bed and a wood closet to the right of the nightstand.
Associated with the earth element, the color brown represents grounding, stability, and security. The color brown evokes feelings of warmth and comfort, and can be seen as a dependable, trustworthy and simple color. When used in feng shui, the color brown can encourage a sense of safety and protection, bringing harmony and balance to a space. One of my favorite earthy colors that I've used in my own home is Alexandria Beige (HC-77) by Benjamin Moore. It's part of their Historical Collection and I just love how warm and cozy the color is. Black

In feng shui, black is associated with the element of water and is often used to bring a sense of flow to a space. It is most often associated with the career area of your home but it can also be used in other areas to support the wealth energy of the wood element. To incorporate black into your home, try adding it in small ways such as an area rug or an accent chair. For a bolder statement, paint the ceiling black. Black is a striking color that can also add a touch of drama and glamour to your home.

Creating a balance of energy in your home is a great way to connect to nature anytime, anywhere. Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that is a powerful tool you can use in your own home to shift the energy in your life. Feng shui uses a variety of tools such as magnetic directions, furniture placement, and even the placement of items throughout your property to create a calm, yet energizing atmosphere. Color is just one of the tools.
