How to Feng Shui Your Desk for Career Success

11/4/2021

Feng shui your desk
Did you know that you can apply the bagua to your desk? Yep! Just like you would apply the bagua to any room in your home or to the floorplan of your entire home, you can also use it to feng shui your desk, too.

Think about this for a minute. Your career is connected to your life path. Your desk influences and symbolizes your career and so it also becomes a symbol of your life path. Makes sense, right?

Here are some easy ways for you to enhance the energy in your office by applying feng shui principles to your desk.

1. Put the desk in the command position
2. Clear off your desk. Completely declutter the top of it and clean out the drawers.
3. Put the printer and other equipment on a credenza or table behind or beside your desk so that you have room on your desk to work on the immediate tasks.
4. Place the bagua over your desk just like you would for any other room in your home, with the career area positioned where you sit at your desk.

The Areas of the Bagua on Your Desk

  • In the back left corner, which is the wealth corner, add a lush plant or a small desk-top fountain to bring in a flow or upward growth of money.
  • The left hand side of the desk is the family gua so this a great place to put a family photo. Seeing your family smiling back at you during the day keeps you feeling secure and grounded, especially when things get hectic.
  • On the lower left corner, the knowledge and spirituality gua, keep the books you're currently reading or even some research that you're working on for a project
  • You're going to be sitting in the career area of your desk. Here's a great tip to keep your career top of mind and keep you focused on your work. Write down your business goals and place them under your keyboard. You can also tape them to the underside of your desk or put them in a drawer in front of you if your desk has one.
  • The back of your desk (the part facing the door) is a great place to show off any awards or to display a picture of you on stage or being recognized for your work. This is also a really great spot for a desk lamp.
  • The back right corner is the relationship area. This is a good place to put a picture of you with your business besties.
  • What inspires you to spark your creativity? Is a piece of art? Is it a book? Even putting your stationery and pens on the right side of your desk can spark your creative flow
  • Next to you on the right lower corner of your desk, keep your phone or your list of contacts there. That way all of your helpful people and benefactors are at hand and available when you need them.

You don't need to put something in every area of your desk. You still need room to work! But think of this practice as a layering effect. You're applying the feng shui tools in your office, then you're layering that energy by applying the tools to your desk too. Before you know it, your office will be the productive hub you've been dreaming of!

Embracing the Energy of Fall Using Feng Shui

10/21/2021

Picture
When you think about the fall, what comes to mind? The cooler weather? The gorgeous colours? Cable knit sweaters, blankets and pumpkin spice everything? When I think about fall, all of that comes to mind but I also think about fall as the season for gathering the harvest, of reaping the rewards of all of the hard work you’ve put in throughout the spring and summer months.

When I was growing up, I heard so many stories about farm life because my mom grew up on a farm. Her parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins were all farmers in southern Ontario so I’ve grown up hearing about all of the things that happened in the fall on the farm. Stories of my grandfather, my great-grandfather and my uncle out in the fields harvesting everything. Stories of my grandmother, my mom and my aunts spending hours canning and preparing everything to store for the winter. Stories of my great-grandparents harvesting things the “old-fashioned” way, and cutting cords of wood to keep the wood stove going all winter long. To me, fall is a time of preparation and just like gathering the harvest, this is the perfect time to gather your energies from the yang season of summer.

With an abundance of food being harvested at this time, fall is definitely a season of abundance. In feng shui pumpkins are considered lucky charms because they attract material goods and wealth. They are also seen as protection against negative energy. With an abundance of pumpkins and gourds at this time of year, you’ll definitely be able to find some that you can decorate your home with.

In feng shui, fall is associated with the metal element, of slowing down and contracting inwards. It’s a yin season, a season of less light, lower energy, and a time for self-reflection. It’s associated with creativity, communication and inspiration. It’s also a time for completing projects and getting things in order.

In fact, just as the trees are dropping their leaves, this is a great time for us to let go of the things that are no longer serving us too. Things like mindsets, habits or relationships that are weighing us down or keeping us from moving forward. This is the perfect time to connect with your inner wisdom.

When decorating your home for fall, the best colours to use in your home during this time are colours associated with the metal element, such as white, grey, and silver as well as warm earthy colours. Yellow and brown are earth colours that bring a grounding, comforting energy to your home. Orange is a social colour and can increase the conversations at family gatherings. Red attracts attention and new opportunities. (It is also the most auspicious colour in feng shui, bringing abundance, health and overall good luck!)

Feng Shui Tips for Fall

  • This is the perfect time to declutter everything in your life that is not working for you. If it’s not supporting your goals, let it go. Physical clutter is one of the first steps in any feng shui practice.
  • Clean out your office and your desk. Get rid of any old business files, ideas, notebooks, pens that are out of ink. All of that stuff is weighing you down and keeping you in the past.  While you’re at it, move your desk into the command position.
  • Finish up any projects that need to be completed. If you’ve started something and have changed your mind about finishing it, let it go if it’s weighing on you.
  • Get things in order. Organize your finances, budgets, schedules and calendars. Start setting your goals for the next year.
  • Make time for self-reflection. Journal. Meditate. Work with a coach, counselor or therapist if necessary. Release all of the old mindsets, beliefs and thoughts that are keeping you stuck. Start a daily gratitude practice to remind you everyday of how blessed you are.
  • Practice deep breathing meditations to strengthen your lungs
  • Eat warm, cooked, comforting foods. What is comfort food to you? Warm apple crisp? Beef stew and biscuits? Pumpkin pie? Now is the time to indulge and enjoy the bounty of food.
  • Decorate with pumpkins, gourds, apples, and items found in nature such as pine cones, nuts, branches and leaves. .
  • Put a bowl of apples on your table to symbolize your table never being empty
  • Use warm spices such as garlic, ginger, curry, turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne in your cooking and baking. The warmth of these spices balance the cold days
  • Decorate your home using metallic finishes, reflective surfaces and round shapes to enhance the metal element
  • Incorporate a balance of elements with items you can find in nature (e.g. branches, acorns, pine cones, feathers, stones, crystals, etc.)
  • Hang a metal wind chime either outside your front door or inside your entrance to enhance the metal energy and attract positive opportunities to you
Fall is a transitional season, just like spring. It's the time between the yang energy of summer and the yin energy of winter. Slow down and enjoy the gentle transition as we get closer to winter.

Feng Shui for Helpful People and Travel Luck

10/7/2021

Picture
Metal is one of the 5 elements in feng shui. Along with the other 4 elements (earth, water, fire and wood) it needs to be used in a balanced way. The 2 areas of your home that are represented by the metal element are the Helpful People gua (this area is also used for Travel luck) and the Creativity gua. Today I’m going to walk you through how to activate and enhance your Helpful People and Travel area.

Helpful People and Travel Luck

This area is located in the front right section of your home, office or desk (yes, you can feng shui your desk!) when you first walk into your home. Check out the article I wrote about the bagua to find this area.

So, what exactly does “helpful people” mean? Well, it can mean all sorts of things. In business, it could be that you need support - business besties, a mastermind, a coach or mentor, or you need to hire just the right people for your team. It could also mean having incredible people as affiliates for your program or course, affiliates who fully support you and your work.

Personally, it could mean having a strong support system around you, or hiring people like contractors or a housekeeper or gardener. If you have a hard time attracting reliable help and support, take a look at the state of your home, especially in the Helpful People area.

When you think about it, helpful people and travel go together anyway. When you’re travelling, you encounter all sorts of people, from your Uber drivers, to flight attendants, to hotel staff, restaurant staff, tour guides… and everything in between. Have you ever encountered a not-so-helpful person on your travels? I sure have!! Also, helpful people can come from anywhere in the world no matter what it is you need help with in life.

Travel doesn’t just have to be a vacation or a business trip either. Travel is any kind of travel… even your regular commute to the city or if you have an upcoming move.

Tips to Activate and Enhance Your Helpful People and Travel Luck

  • To activate the metal energy, use items made of metal, brass, gold, copper, etc.
  • Incorporate things that are round in shape. Round metal decorative spheres, a metal bowl or a properly placed round mirror with a metal frame are perfect in this area.
  • Use the colour grey in this area as it represents the metal energy
  • Include objects that represent helpful beings such as gods, angels and spirits. You can even include photos of ancestors who have passed away if you think their spirit will help you in life. A note about buddhas… if a buddha is something that you connect with and want to include in this area, use one that has a body, not just the head.
  • Put your list of important contacts in this area (or in that area of your desk).
  • Display a picture or travel guide of the location you want to travel to. With the pandemic, international travel is not exactly on the top of most people’s lists, but the pandemic is temporary. Eventually you will be able to travel to far away lands again if you want to! So, put images of those destinations in this area. (Let me know in the comments where you want to travel to!)
  • Make some noise! Use a brass or metal bell, windchime or singing bowl to activate the energy in this area.
When this area of your home, office or bedroom, is activated you will start to see that helpful people just seem to come into your life when you most need them. And we can always use some help from time to time, right?!

Feng Shui for Anxiety and Burnout

9/12/2021

Picture
In 2007 I was a senior manager in a retail company, where I was responsible for a lot of stores, a lot of product, a lot of people and a lot of money. I was also married with 3 kids under the age of 11. My oldest son had also been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease less than 2 years prior so I was responsible for taking him to the children’s hospital every month for testing and treatment… and the children’s hospital is a 9 hour drive from home! So, needless to say, I was doing A LOT of travelling between work and my son’s doctor’s visits.

I started feeling really tired but I honestly just ignored it. Then shortly before Christmas in late 2007 (the absolute busiest time for me at work) I had my first ever panic attack. I had never had one before and I thought I was losing my mind. I continued to have panic attacks and yet I continued to push through because I had a job to do and kids to take care of.

In January 2008 I couldn’t do it anymore. My body just shut down. For the first time in my life, I could not function. I had such severe anxiety that I couldn’t even walk out my own front door. There was no way I could work when I was afraid to leave my house. I was burned out and it became very clear that for many, many years I had taken care of everyone else around me but I hadn’t taken care of me.

Today I want to share with you a few things you can do in your home to prevent burn out and also to help you overcome any depression or anxiety that is going on in your life right now. When your home’s energy is high, your personal energy is high. Feng shui has some ways you can improve the energy in your home and life to get you feeling like yourself again.

Check the mess: Your house is an extension of you. Whenever you’re feeling frantic, anxious or overwhelmed, look for the mess somewhere in your home. When you have a mess in your house, it symbolizes a mess in your life. Where is your mess? In the basement? In the garage? In closets? Find your messes and start tackling them, one at a time.

Add grounding elements to your home: When you’re burned out (or almost at that point), your mind is on overdrive which can also lead to adrenal fatigue and exhaustion. To slow down your monkey brain, bring some earth elements into your home. A really good area to put these in is the center of your home because the center of your home affects all other areas. Also consider the NE corner of your home, which is the spirituality and personal development area. This is also a great area to set up a space to meditate, to do some journaling or some yoga and breathwork. Bring in earth elements such as crystals, natural stones, and  items made of clay or terra cotta. Use earth colours, such as brown, beige and yellow to calm down the energy in that area.

Inject some colour into your life: Colour has such a huge impact on your mind and your overall energy. When you feel all alone and need some help, wear white to help lift your energy and bring helpful people into your life, Wear red to give you strength, protection and courage. To help you feel more loving towards yourself, wear green and when you’re feeling overwhelmed with too many demands, wear blue to help you feel cared for.

Take a bath in epsom salts: The salt draws out any negative energy that your body is holding onto. One night when I felt extremely anxious, I ran myself a bath with bath salts and I actually sat there and did a meditation in the tub. That combination worked so well, I did it every night for a month!

Give yourself a break: Yes, there are things you can and should do to shift the energy that is surrounding you when you’re having a rough time in your life. Besides implementing the feng shui tips I just gave you, I want you to start being kinder to yourself. You’re not Wonder Woman. You can’t do it all nor do you need to. As a perfectionist VIrgo I am the first person to tell you that letting go of things is not easy… but it needs to be done in order for you to be healthy. Delegate things to other people. Reach out and ask for help. Be kind to yourself and forgive yourself for things.

Feng Shui Your Bedroom for Optimal Sleep

8/29/2021

Picture
Your master bedroom is one of the most important areas in your home because it’s the one room that you spent a lot of time in. It’s a place for rest and romance, yet have you ever considered that your bedroom could be damaging your health and your relationships?

  • Maybe you feel like you get plenty of sleep but you never wake up feeling fully rested.
  • Maybe you wake up during the night but you aren't quite sure why.
  • Maybe you and your partner are having relationship issues.

Well, look no further than your bedroom to fix those issues.. Just a few simple changes can make all the difference.

Feng shui your bedroom for optimal sleep

Let’s start with how to optimize your sleep. Below are some feng shui tips that will let you feel well rested in the morning.

The first and most important thing is to put your bed in the command position. I wrote a blog about the command position that you can link to here. Here’s the key. You need to make sure that the head of the bed is up against a solid wall, with a direct line of sight to the door without being directly in with the door.

Get yourself a solid headboard. It doesn’t matter if it’s wood or if it’s upholstered. Just make sure it’s solid, not one with bars (Remember those old metal ones that your grandma had on the farm?! Don't use those.).

No mirrors in the bedroom. Mirrors are great to use in feng shui when they’re positioned properly. The thing with mirrors is that chi bounces off mirrors. So if you want to enhance the chi in a room, position a mirror to reflect a beautiful outdoor view. However, when mirrors are placed in a bedroom, the chi is bounced around the room making the energy too active for a good night’s rest. Also when a mirror is placed in a master bedroom, that energy can invite a third party into the relationship, particularly when the bed is visible in the mirror. So if you don’t want your spouse having an affair, remove the mirror!

Remove ALL of the electronics in your bedroom. That means no more watching Netflix in bed and no more scrolling through Instagram on your phone before dozing off. The only things you should have that plug in are your light sources, like table lamps or a floor lamp. If you absolutely feel like you need a TV in your room, cover it up when you’re not using it by putting it in a cabinet where you can close the doors or by covering it with a blanket.

Declutter under your bed. Chi needs to flow smoothly through your bedroom especially while you’re asleep. If there are things stuffed under the bed, the chi gets stuck and isn’t able to create a calm soothing environment for you to get enough quality rest.

Quality sleep is one of the most important things when it comes to your overall health and well-being,  We're all busy with careers, families and a whole host of other responsibilities. You owe it to yourself to get a night's rest.

Feng Shui and Colour

8/6/2021

Picture

The question I get asked the most often in my consultations is "what colour should I paint my walls?".  Colour is such a personal choice so the answer is...  you can paint your walls any colour that speaks to you!!  The only time I recommend a totally neutral colour palette is when you're staging your home to put it on the market.

So, what's in a colour?

Red is related to fire energy. Red is a very auspicious (lucky!) colour in feng shui but don't overdo it with red otherwise there will be a lot of chaotic energy in your home. I recommend using red accents instead such as pillows, decor pieces and art. Red is also related to passion. Put red sheets on your bed and wear red underwear to spice things up!

Pink is related to feminine, girly energy and can attract love and friendship into your life. It represents compassion and sincerity. Pink can be used anywhere in your home to soften up the energy in a space.

Yellow, orange and brown reflect the colours of nature such as the trunk of strong tree or the richness of fertile soil. These colours represent stability so when we need some security and strength, these are great colours to incorporate into our environments. One of my favourite earthy colours is Calm (2111-70) by Benjamin Moore.

Purple is also a very auspicious colour in feng shui because it's related to wealth and abundance.  It represents luxury and ambition. Try incorporating luxurious materials, such as velvet into your home that are a deep, rich purple colour.

White represents purity, space, and openness and be can used when we want to check back in with ourselves and start a blank slate. Personally, I love that paint companies have such a wide range of whites to choose from. Some whites have a high reflective value (such as Chantilly Lace (OC-65) by Benjamin Moore) and are great for small spaces that don't get much natural light.

Greens and blues are related to nature such as the colour of fresh plants and the wide open blue sky. Blues and greens fall in the middle of the colour spectrum which is more relaxing for the eyes so it's no wonder that these colours are healing and therapeutic.  Using these colours in your home will create a calm, restful space.

Black represents the water element and is often used as a stabilizing colour in design. Try using black in an area rug or an accent chair to make the space feel more grounded. If you're going for drama, try painting the ceiling black.

What colours are you drawn to? Personally, I love bold colours.  I often to need step back and take a look at the bigger picture to keep things from looking a little too wild! What about you? Are you a lover of bold colours like me or do you prefer a more neutral palette?

For more great tips on choosing calming paint colours for a relaxing home interior, check out the recent article we were featured in.

Help Kids Ace Their Exams Using Feng Shui

5/3/2021

Feng Shui Studying
It’s that time of year where students of all ages are getting ready to finish up year end school projects and study for exams. A lot of people really stress out at this time of year, whether they’re in grade 9 or completing a PhD. Enhancing the Knowledge and Spirituality area of the bagua works not just for exams and studying but also for things such try-outs, auditions, or even submitting book proposals. For example, my son is now a professional ballet dancer. When he was finishing high school, of course he wanted to do well on his final high school exams, but he was more concerned about doing really well on his auditions for post-secondary training. So we made sure he was prepared, physically, mentally and environmentally.

Knowledge and Spirituality Area

The Knowledge and Spirituality area of your home is associated with reflection, meditation, inner guidance, learning and studying. The energy in this area is about cultivating an intelligent mind, both academically and spiritually.  When you’re trying to help your kids achieve something academically, ideally you’d be able to set up a study space in the NE corner of your home. In that area you will want a solid desk or table to work at, textbooks and other study materials, school supplies and a computer, laptop or tablet.  However, it may not always be possible or practical to set things up in that area of the home because your Knowledge area may end up being in a kitchen or bathroom or even a garage. An alternative option is to choose the NE area of your child’s bedroom to set up their knowledge area.
Below are some tips on how to give your kids the motivation, clarity and memory skills to ace those final exams and achieve academic and career goals, no matter what area of the home your knowledge area is.

  • Always place the desk in the command position so the child is facing the door.
  • Display motivational quotes and  photos of any mentors
  • The knowledge area is represented by the earth element which is solid, grounding and stable. Art or photos of mountains as well as colours of mountains such as greens and earth tones as well as blue and black (water colours)
  • If your child is heading to university or is in university already, display an object or picture that represents their major and/or career goals (when my son was getting ready for his auditions, he had a picture of himself from when he trained in Europe for a summer right on his desk)
  • Create a fame and recognition wall with symbols of personal academic success, such as awards, diplomas, letters of recommendation, trophies, photos from performances, or some of their prized artwork
  • Leave a light on in this area to fire up your intelligence (fire creates earth), keep on until bedtime
  • Write out and display personal affirmations of success, things that really resonate with your child
  • Students should use red folders, notebooks and binders when going to school. This is to support motivation, taking action and attract good luck (red is a very auspicious colour in feng shui)
  • Place crystal point on NE corner of the desk or in NE corner of the room
  • If your child has big aspirations and  wants to be known globally for their work, display crystal globe in NE area and give it spin every so often to get the world’s attention

7-tiered Pagoda

Another really popular feng shui item for education excellence is the 7-tiered pagoda, also known as the “education tower”. It is believed to:
  • Create energy and revitalize the beholder
  • Improve grades and studying
  • Enhance competence and clarity
  • Translate negative energy in the area into good chi, carrying with it fame, academic luck and the capability to move forward in your field of work

Place it beside the bed or on the desk to help improve concentration and mental capabilities, allowing for better memory and accomplishment on exams
Our lives don't happen in silos so when you’re trying to achieve a goal with the help of feng shui, it’s often helpful to enhance other areas of your home at the same time. To deepen knowledge and learning, do some work activating the helpful people area of your home to get support from teachers, mentors and friends. To enhance career aspirations, enhance the career area and fame area, which will help you prepare to be recognized in your field.

How and Why to Use Feng Shui in Your Home

4/5/2021

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that literally means wind and water. It is a set of principles that help align one’s living space with who they are and what they want to achieve in life. It works by balancing the flow of chi, which is the energy life force that runs through everything, connecting us to the earth, the universe and other beings. The goals of Feng Shui are to arrange living spaces to create balance with the natural world, invite positive chi into the home so that life feels both energized and balanced and to establish harmony between an individual and their environment.

How Do You Use Feng Shui?

Feng Shui balances out the yin and yang energies in your space. A map called a bagua is used to identify certain life areas in your home so you can balance out the energy effectively. This map is superimposed onto a floor plan of your home, over an aerial view of your property or onto the floorplan of your business.  Each of these areas represent a different part of your life, are represented by one of the 5 elements and has either a yin or yang energy in the space.

Basic Bagua Mindful Living Interiors
The life areas are:
  • Wealth
  • Fame
  • Relationships
  • Family
  • Children
  • Knowledge and Spirituality
  • Career
  • Helpful People and Travel

You’ll notice that there are only 8 areas listed but that there are 9 squares in the bagua. The center of the bagua represents you and your overall health and wellness. That area is connected to all the other areas. That’s because when you’re not healthy it affects every other area of your life and each of the  other areas can also impact your overall health.

Besides the areas in the bagua, Feng Shui also works to balance the 5 elements.  The 5 elements are
  • Wood
  • Water
  • Fire
  • Earth
  • Metal

Each gua is represented by one of the 5 elements and Feng Shui works to balance each of the elements along with each of your life areas.

For example:
The Wealth area of the bagua is represented by the wood element. To improve your wealth, you’ll want to enhance the wood element by adding plants, the colour green and items that represent upward growth, such as tall pillars or vases.  You’ll also want to add in some water and earth elements to support the growth of the wood element and you’ll want to decrease the fire and metal elements as they destroy or reduce the wood element.

Before you even begin to move things around and add elements to your home, the first step is to declutter your space. Clutter has been proven to increase stress levels. So, my number one tip to get you started on your Feng Shui journey is to do some serious decluttering first.

Why Use Feng Shui?

Want to change your life? Start by changing your environment.  Research has shown that our environments play a huge role in how we feel and how we perform. If you create balance in your home, it can reflect how you react to outside experiences.  Feng Shui can quickly shift the energy in your space, allowing more positive energy to come into your home. That positive energy brings new, positive opportunities to you. Even if you’re skeptical about Feng Shui, it never hurts to move some furniture and clear out the cobwebs.

BTB Feng Shui - The Bagua

10/3/2020

There are different schools of feng shui but in this post we’re going to focus on BTB or Western feng shui.  Regardless of what school of feng shui you work with, all feng shui practitioners use something called a bagua.  The bagua is essentially a road map to your life through the various areas of your home and/or property.

The bagua has 9 areas called guas.  Each gua represents a different area of your life, and each one is represented by a different colour, direction, element and number.  The 9 guas are:

Feng Shui Bagua Mindful Living Interiors
.
Wealth and Prosperity - foster an abundance of good fortune, money and positive things into your life

Fame and Reputation - improve your reputation, get recognized in your chosen field, be valued by your peers

Love and Relationships - attract a new partner into your life, improve your existing relationship

Family and New Beginnings - strengthen the bonds within your family, start off in a positive way when you’re making big changes in your life and starting something new

Health and well-being - your health affects everything else in your life. That’s why it’s at the center of the bagua.

Children, Creativity and Completion - boost your creativity, gets your kids more focused on completing homework, learn new creative pursuits, finish projects

Knowledge and Spirituality - expand your knowledge, read books, study, meditate, connect with spirit/the Universe/God

Career - create a flow of career opportunities, attract new customers or clients to your business, increase your income

Helpful People and Travel - attract people into your life who will help you move towards your goals, increase travel opportunities.

To determine where each gua is in your home, the bagua is laid over a scaled floor plan of your home. Don't worry if your home is an odd shape, if you live in a high rise condo or a basement apartment.  The bagua can be applied to any style home or property.

So, there you have it. The basics of the bagua that BTB feng shui practitioners use. The bagua is primarily used on homes and businesses, but can be used on properties of any size. It can also be applied to just one room, your desk or even your coffee table.

Where to Put Your Bed for Good Feng Shui

9/28/2020

In feng shui, there are a few key areas of your home that need to be addressed before you do anything else. The most important areas are your kitchen, your master bedroom and your entrance. Today we're going to focus on the bedroom, more specifically the bed. In your bedroom, the most important thing to consider is where your bed is placed.

The best place for your bed is in the command position.  So, what the heck is the command position?  Well, let me show you.

The command position is when your furniture is placed facing the entrance to the room. The command position allows you to feel safe and secure.  Nobody is going to sneak up on you or scare the crap out of you when they walk in the door.  The command position also applies to your stove and to the seating arrangements in your living room. For example, in the living room, you want to have the furniture placed in a way where people don't need to turn around to see who might be coming in the room.

When you're in bed, you want to feel safe, cozy and secure.  The last thing you want is to have a feeling that someone could walk into your room unannounced!!  In the bedroom, when you’re lying in bed, you want to have sight of the door without having the bed directly in line with the door.  When the bed is directly in line with the door, that is called the coffin position in Feng Shui because dead people are removed feet first!  Another consideration is that you should try  to make sure there is a solid wall behind the top of the bed.

Feng Shui Command Position
The image on the left shows a bed that is not in the command position. Notice how the bed is directly in line with the door and there is also a window right behind the head of the bed? The energy that is coming into that room is coming in through the door and going right over the bed and out the window.  There is no flow of energy in the room and this arrangement will make the people sleeping in that bed feel very uneasy and overwhelmed, leading to some sleepless nights.

The image on the right shows a bed in the command position.  The people sleeping in the bed have a sight line to the door without being directly in line with it.  Even though the windows are behind the bed, there is a solid wall between them that the head of the bed is against.  Adding floor to ceiling drapes on the windows and a large headboard will alleviate any residual energy escaping out the windows.
There may be times when there is no possible way to position your bed in a command position, such as when a room has a lot of windows, the bedroom has large double doors leading into the room, or the room is so small that there is only place in the room that the bed will fit. If you physically cannot put your bed in the command position, there are things you can do to remedy that.  For example, if you cannot avoid facing the door, place something in between your bed and the door as a barrier, such as a large footboard, a bench or a room divider.  If there is no solid wall behind your bed, invest in a large, solid headboard and hang window coverings such as drapes or blinds on any of the windows that are behind the bed.

The command position also applies to the position of your stove, the seating areas in your living areas and your desk. The idea is that you never want your back facing a door and you don’t want to have to turn around to see who is coming in the room.  I'll go into those situations in another post but for today, go move your bed.  You'll get a much better sleep tonight!
